Fanwy

Pronounced “Von Wee.”

You know, sometimes even when a name looks stupid, I hear how it is pronounced and think, “Okay…well it looks stupid, and it should not be a name – but at least it doesn’t sound like a hobo sucking off his dog.”

That’s not the case here.

It’s Welsh and pronounced Van-wee. it comes from Myfanwy (a woman’s name derived from annwyl, ‘beloved’).

Ok I have to stick up for this one, being a bit Welsh. As the previous poster said, it’s short for Myfanwy, pronounced Mivanwee. Unfortunately it only sounds pretty when said in a Welsh accent. Everyone else seems to think it’s along the lines of “my fanny”. Bearing in mind that I live in London, not Wales, and that fanny has a different meaning in the UK than it does in the US, that’s why I rejected it as a name for my daughter.
