Hemi is a Maori name based on the English ‘James’ or ‘Jimmy’, or possibly ‘Sam’, I can’t remember. The Maoris were a bit short on consonants when the English arrived (but they have truly epic vowel sounds) and the letter J was not yet available. Now that supply has been provided, they are world leaders in the production of Jaxxons, Jaycyns and Jaykubs.
