Liev

by Lemonjello Redenbacher on December 24, 2010

This kid will constantly be called Levi, and people will spell his name Levi, time and time and time again. ┬áIt will be maddening for him, and all because his parents wanted him to be “unique.”

It’s Russian, dear. They know how to say it- leave them. Means lion or something…
Ever heard of Lev?

What the fuck is it with the “leave them” shit? If I wanted a mother, I wouldn’t have smothered mine with a pillow.

And no – I’ve never heard of Lev. And I’m glad – it sounds stupid too.

What kind of spelling is this anyway? “Lie-v”? It’s pronounced more like “lyev”, “ye” being a diphthong in this case, only shorter. Actually it’s not a good approximation, because in (Russian language) reality there’s no diphthong, only the beginning “l” is palatalized. There’s simply no good way to transcribe it into English, it should sound nothing like “liar”.
