Bona

by Lemonjello Redenbacher on June 14, 2010

This is one of the most cruel things that any parents could name their little girl, if they plan to live in the U.S. at least.  I can almost  already hear the 12 year old boys salivating at the thought of having a girl named Bona around to terrorize.

I usually look up the meaning of a name when I post it on here.  I really couldn’t care less what a name means if it’s a) unpronounceable, b) butchered by a ridiculous and concocted spelling and/or c) detrimental on its face (as is the case here with Bona).  The reason I look them up is to try to get inside the heads of the poor, poor bastards that do this to their children.  I’m not sure that I have ever succeeded in that regard, though.

I am told by the great Google Gods that this Bona means “good” in Italian.  Fine and dandy, if you live in Italy.  Here in America, however, it means “girl who will be associated with erect dicks for the rest of her life and will therefore suffer through years of bad nicknames and playground shame.”

“Bona” is something you yell at a girl in Italy (being not a Milord, because it means “hot chick”). It’s not a name.

I wonder what those parents meant to do since they now call a daughter “hot chick” all the way.

Giulia, possibly the parents of the poor girl had in mind that Bona is also an italian ancient noble name (e.g. Bona di Savoia, duchess of Milan in 15th century, marquise Bona Frescobaldi, etc).
Btw, Bona Frescobaldi is often teased for her name also in Italy….
