I bet Mom and Dad thought they were naming their little girl something beautiful — something unique because, of course, little Zayda just can’t be “like all the others.”

Guess what, Mom and Dad?  Zayda means “grandpa” in Yiddish.  Guess you got your wish — little Zayda will most certainly be the only girl in her class named after an aging man whose children have children.

Zayda may mean “grandpa” in Yiddish, but it’s also an Arabic girls’ name. I actually wasn’t aware of the “grandpa” meaning, since not many young people speak Yiddish.
